Domes opens on Geraldton foreshore

Wednesday, 26 May 2010

Dome opened on the foreshore at 6am this morning. Mayor Ian Carpenter cut the ribbon to officially open the building at a ceremony on Monday night, attended by City leaders, contractors who worked on the project, and Dome Coffees of Australia executives.

It will now  be open seven days a week, from 6am until late. Dome CEO Nigel Oakley said the opening was a triumph on a number of levels. “Most of all, this is a triumph for the community, and the community really is what it’s all about for us”.

Dome Geraldton manager Graham Sertorio said they were a family friendly business. “We want to get involved in sponsorship of sporting groups,” he said. “We want to be part of the community here.” He said they had employed and trained over 50 genuinely local staff of all ages, some for their first job.

“This  is the start of the new journey of Dome in Geraldton,” he said. “It’s been a long journey to get here, some would say controversial, but we’re looking forward now.” More than half the council attended the opening night, along with about 140 other guests, and praised the finished building.

“Dome was a very large decision, and one that a lot of local people weren’t prepared to take,” Cr Carpenter said. “But at the end of the day we have a wonderful foreshore because the council was prepared to take a risk.”
